As part of the national events celebrating VE Day 80, Northumberland County Council, in association with SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, held a Commemorative Service at Hexham Abbey in the evening of 8 May 2025.
The Service was followed by the lighting of a beacon in the Abbey grounds by Dr Caroline Pryer, Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland and Vice President North of England Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association. Also in attendance was Mr George Farr, the newly installed High Sheriff of Northumberland. Dr Pryer was accompanied by her Lord Lieutenant's Cadets:
