South Tyneside and Sunderland Healthcare Group Celebrate Armed Forces Day
Employee reservists from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force came together for a special celebratory lunch in the staff restaurant hosted by Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Corporate Affairs, Carol Harries along with Director of HR and OD, Kath Griffin, Director of Operations, Sean Fenwick and Director of Nursing and Patient Experience, Melanie Johnson.
Brian Hughes-Mundy, Human Resources Manager said: "Across the Healthcare Group we have a number of reservists who make a significant contribution to both Trusts through the skills they bring from their military training and experience. Both Trusts are Armed Forces Friendly employers, with City Hospitals Sunderland awarded the Gold standard by HRH The Duke of Sussex and South Tyneside are working towards achieving the Silver Award.
As part of the event, Carol also presented a care certificate to Corporal Tony McKenna who is a regular soldier and through the Step into Health Programme has been doing some training at the hospital as part of his resettlement package prior to leaving the Army. Tony commented that he had received ‘phenomenal’ support from colleagues during his initial training. Tony has been offered an employment opportunity with the Trust. We look forward to welcoming Tony to the Team when he leaves the Army in November."
